Sweethearts by the river
Dropping leaves and watching them spin,
Endless days of summer
Never wanting to come in.
Lying by the waterside
Close to a special friend
Who shares our innermost secrets
And will to the very end.

Sweethearts by the river
Walking and holding hands
Carving initials in a tree
Watching the reeds and strands.
Sweethearts by the river
The joy of that first kiss,
A sense of joy and rapture
You're glad you didn't miss.

Sweethearts by the river
Posing for photographs
A radiant bride, a beaming groom
Some small talk and a laugh.
Sweethearts by the river
Hopes and plans and schemes
Sharing with family and friends
The secrets of their dreams.

Sweethearts by the river
With children at their feet,
Smiling and chatting often
With other families they meet.
Sweethearts by the river
Children having fun,
Parents taking some rest
From busy days on the run.

Sweethearts by the river
A very special memory place,
Holding hands and walking
At a much slower pace.
Sweethearts by the river
Sitting and resting a while,
Sweethearts by the river
Sharing a special smile.
